windows 7 - HELP Empty windows 7 - HELP

Post  Will Munney Sat Jul 09, 2011 4:08 am

Right i am completely fed up with this "Not Responding" crap in Windows 7.

I am at a point where i am going to take a hammer to the machine.

I have just built a new machine & have had nothing but trouble.

- Firefox "Not Responding": Happens when browsing every so often
- Explorer "Not responding": Same as above
- Assassins Creed
- IWin games

The list goes on.

I have updated drivers to the latest (excluding bios) - still same result

I have checked CPU temps - 39° to 40°

When googling this problem it seems to be common but yet there seems to be no fix.

System Specs
Motherboard - Asus P8P67 Pro Ver 3
CPU - Intel i7 2600K
Memory - Kingston Hyperx 6G
Graphics - Gigabyte 6970 OC 2G
HDD - Corsair Force Series 60G SSD (Windows only)
HDD - Samsung 1TB - (Storage & programs)

Any help is good help Smile

Willy

Will,

Not sure if this will help or not but any way to check the memory or put different memory in the machine? I have found that memory can be a troublesome thing which is hard to work out when it is not working properly. Another thing is the power supply got enough juice to support all the hardware? If it is close to the limit then funny things can also happen.

Hope you manage to sort the rig out as there is nothing more annoying that when it is not working properly.

Good luck.

are those temps when under full load?? what size power supply? are you running win7 sp1?? maybe run MSI afterburner and watch what happens when things start not responding.

i had to muck around with my gpu settings as i was also having problems with win7 as well. its not the same problem as you are having but ill explain what my problems were and what i did to fix it. PS my card is a dual gpu card so of course they have more issues than your single gpu card.

basically windows was saying my graphics driver failed and reloaded said driver. what the problem was that windows aero wants immediate responses from the gpu. but when the gpu when it is at idle its only running at 157mhz and 300mhz (those are gpu clock and mem clock speeds) which isnt fast enough for windows aero. so i had to modify my clock speeds as there are 3 settings for ati, a min/med/max. So i upped the min to 400/400 and upped my voltage as well. this sorted most of my problems. i also control my fan speeds manually. when im just on desktop/watching vids etc my fan speed sits at 30% but i up it to 60% before i run a game. i did setup a custom fan speed map but this way is easier for me to know its working as the ccc wasnt controlling the fan speed properly. now im still on 11.2 drivers and ill be going to 11.4 as 11.4 are the next best driver atm.

If you want will, you can give it to me and i can have a look at it. up to you

We'll i am trialling each module of memory to see if it consistent.

So far module 2 has been worse that 1 on "not responding" issues.

As for power supply i am running a 850watt Thermaltake Tough Power.
Thinking about i probably should have upgraded.

Will see how i go Ulti, haven't taken to it with a sledge hammer yet....... (close though)

I think i may have found my problem.

While i did now maybe this is causing the issue.

Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default.

I'm running 2000

i have just looked on asus website and 2000mhz is not supported for that board.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67_PRO/#specifications

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 Hz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture

I had a quick look into this and you need to time the ram to 1866mhz as P67 boards cant run 2000mhz.

let me know if you need a hand with doing that

Would it be better to just buy the right ram rather than tuning this down?

I even downloaded the excel spreadsheet from ASUS regarding the RAM that can be used on this board.

Will see how i go Ulti.

Cheers

yeah if you are able to just take it back and swap it for some 1600 ram that would be easier. let me know how you go

Nice job sorting through that. I think those sort of errors are the most frustrating so glad you where able to get away without restoring to the sledge hammer solution Wink

Don't start cheering just yet.

Issue is still around.

I even reduce to 1333mhz & still have the issue.

I do however have a question.

Are the pins on the CPU suppose to fold down? (see pictures below)

This is my first time at a Intel Machine, & all my concerns about this build are coming true.

there are no pins on intel cpu's anymore, that looks like your mobo. if so yes the pins are meant to be bent down on an angle

Interesting find.

Looks like it could be the terrabyte drive causing the issue.

I have installed Firefox on the c drive & have had no issues (touch wood)

But will continue with testing though as i may need to buy new HD if that is the case.
